get the wheel turning a little
I'm gonna throw this up here for us to discuss before I drop (or even start to write) this big one.
I had a conversation with a friend a few months ago about doing this for a purpose. She had asked me why I had done certain things in my life and my only answer was "for fun." Simple as that, I did things just so I could have fun. The friend I was talking to didn't like this answer because my purpose wasn't to give glory to God, or to see people come to know him through the things that I do.
The thing I'm pondering is, Is there anything wrong with in your purpose driven life, to have the purpose of things you do be...just for fun? God likes me to enjoy myself and the things that I do right? And as long as I'm not sinning or causing other to fall its wrong is it?
Let me know your thoughts on this please.

If the entire purpose of your life is to have fun, I'd say you're coming up short in the "meaning" department. But I don't think there is anything at all wrong with doing some things just for the fun of it and for no other reason. God created us to be able to have fun and enjoy things.

Does sleeping bring glory to God? If not, tell your friend she's going to need to start up a pretty hefty speed habit in order to make way for her purpose driven life.

Although I think many concepts in The Purpose Driven Life are valid, I don't like the word, "Driven." It makes me feel like I'm not working hard enough.
Georgia, as always, nails it.
David, you crack me up . . . thanks!
Petey, I think your friend misses the point that it is a believers "life" that brings God glory. Its our faith that pleases God, not our works. Your life, whether having fun or experiencing pain, brings God glory.
He made you to be you.

...a serious question deserves a serious answer:
The use of fun as an attributive adjective, as in a fun time, a fun place, probably originated in a playful reanalysis of the use of the word in sentences such as "It is fun to ski", where fun has the syntactic function of adjectives such as amusing or enjoyable. The usage became popular in the 1950s and 1960s, though there is some evidence to suggest that it has 19th-century antecedents, but it can still raise eyebrows among traditionalists (i.e. people who are driven).
The day may come when this usage is entirely unremarkable, but one may want to avoid it in more formal contexts...

Um, yeah. I like the movie "Chariots of Fire." Oldie but goodie. This guy felt God's pleasure when he ran. I know that's not the first thing I feel when I run, but anyways, to each his own....seriously though. who knows but that having fun gives glory to God. I'm a purpose driven person so it takes me a minute to unwind from all that jazz and just realize that living is a part of life and that we are created to enjoy God and love Him forever....I think its key though and its all circular...
